Would a young tort succumb to predators like birds in England?

I have no idea what kind of birds you have, but will assume absolutely. There are quite a few bird species that eat small animals, reptiles.

Its possible.

When you say "young", what size and species are you talking about?

Yes I think so, I wouldn't risk leaving hatchlings uncovered

Where I live in Florida I have bobcats, armadillos, coons, fox, coyotes, rats, snakes, birds of prey. I cover all my animals because all it would take is you run inside for the phone or get distracted and the results could be bad.

Crows, jackdaws and ravens could certainly take a hatchling, but otherwise most of your birds are a threat.

I never leave my Russian outside unattended if he isn't in an enclosure (he is 1yr old). Seagulls, Crows, Jackdaws are all big greedy birds and it's not worth taking the risk.
