I am preparing to buy a baby sulcata. I am trying to set up my habitat based on advice in this forum and want to make the correct changes before purchasing him or her. I currently have a 75 gallon tank with a CHE and basking bulb hanging from one side inside the tank. In the middle I was able to attach a reptisun 10.0 UVB 18 inch fluorescent bulb. On the other side I have a towel over the screen to keep in heat and humidity. I am going to let it sit for 24 hours before checking the temperatures with the infrared gun. I want to purchase a thermostat to run the CHE is on but am wondering what people have had the best experience with. I am also wondering if I should have another CHE on the other side by the hide?

Hi and welcome Shelly , I am far from an expert ! It looks as if you are off to a good start . I would suggest a piece of plexiglass to replace the towel , and yes you will probably need another CHE in that area . My only other concern might be , as your tort grows you may find your light and CHE's a bit to close for his comfort ? But adjustments can always be made ! We all have things that affect our idea's , room , cost , where we live etc. ! I think you will have a happy little sulcata in that tank ! :)

Hi, and welcome to the Forum!

It's good that you're getting it all set up prior to getting the tortoise. Use your infra red thermometer and check the temps all over the floor of the whole habitat.

You need a cover that is impermeable, and a towel won't cut it. Even a little sheet of plastic film would be better than a towel.

You also need to know the humidity inside the tank. I pour a whole pitcher full of water over the substrate and mix it up with my hand, then pat it down to firm it.

Be sure to show us pictures of your new baby when he arrives.
