Hi all.
My Misses (dawn) is always looking for bargains on fruit for the our redfoot and homeana tortoises.
Today's speciality is Persimmon.
I've never come across this before.
Has anyone got any info on this fruit. Is it a yes,no or on occasions fruit.

:D

Thanks. Craig.

I don't have experience feeding a fruit-eating tortoise. I imagine persimmons would be fine. They can be really sweet, so I imagine you'd want to rotate them in a varied diet so that you don't overload on sugar.

There are two different kinds of persimmons out and about. There is one that is more of a longer oval shape -similar to a roma tomato. -It is really important that this kind is ALL THE WAY RIPE or even over ripe. It should be a nice orange color and feel squishy when you press it. If you eat an unripe one it's gross, sour, and cotton-like. bleck. Ripe ones are fine.

If you have the persimmon that is more squat/flatter doughnut shaped. It can be eaten when it is still firm and will still be sweet. Look for good orange color.

Also, people typically don't eat the skin. No idea what a tortoise would think of it.

Yes. I can't remember their name but these are the first "oval shaped" variety I talked about. If they're not ripe, they are pretty yucky. Almost astringent. Make sure they are really ripe. Really orange and soft. Once they are ripe, they will be mushy and the top leaf/head can be easily pulled off.

They are very ripe now. We go round to our local supermarket about 30mins before they close and scope up all fruit/veg that are on offer at the end of the day. Romaine, bunches of bananas , melons
4 pack of figs, greens, mushrooms. All like 15 to 20p. Happy days for torts.

Thanks again. Your a star. :D.

They are very weird fruits. We had some donated for chimps and we had to try a bite to see whether the chimps might like them, and how best to serve them. Hard to explain what happens when you put it in your mouth. It feels very weird, like it sucks all the moisture out of your mouth. I don't know if a tortoise will like the flavor or not, but I suspect they might get freaked out by the weird sensation.
