From time to time I get hatchlings. Either ones I produce or ones given to me or purchased. I built a couple outdoor hatchling enclosures about 6 years ago and although they are weathered they still work great. My goal was not to build the typical solid wall enclosure. I wanted to provide a way hatchlings could bask in the early morning sun. I feel that many of the issues people have with hatchlings can be directly linked to intense basking spots (anything over 90 degrees) and I wanted to let my hatchlings get all the benefits of the sun minus the mid morning to mid afternoon intensity which is still available, but seldom used.

As you can see the enclosures are setup mostly for hiding spots and shade. I only provide them small areas of direct sunlight, which bye the way is a waste because they are never in those areas. They all prefer to bask in the broken up sun light penetrating the grass or bushes and never fully expose their entire bodys to the sun.

Very nice Paul,
I've heard you talk about them before, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

Great design. I love the mesh sides, but still with a few inches of wood on the bottom to give little ones a visual barrier.

Tom, I have shared those pics via email with tortoise keepers and your the only one who noticed that little design of the visual barrier. Mesh sides actually scare the heck out of me for tortoises especially hatchlings who, as you know, will find even the slightest bit of trouble.

I've never looked it up, but I think it's a type of honeysuckle.

I am very interested in the plant as well. I have seen some that very closely resemble those around here and at my mother's house, and they are referred to as hummingbird bushes. I think is the same plnat in your photo, but I will do some more looking. I was wondering if my tortoises could eat the plants I have seen, and would love to put them in my enclosure, because I know from experience that they will come back after a relatively cold winter (not read as snowy).

I like that plastic wire. I'll bet it was pretty easy to work with. Nice enclosures!
