Hey everyone! It's been a little bit but today is the first day I've let Fig outside to explore his enclosure and I'm a nervous wreck!!
I bought bags of seeds from someone out in Vegas (recommended on here) to grow tortoise safe weeds (all the bigger plants are fake) and have grown out his little garden for a few months.
I keep a trail of diamataceous earth around the border but I still see a ton of little red ants inside his enclosure. I know fire ants are a concern and I am going to treat my entire yard now.
Another thing I'm nervous about is the heat. I went out there and temped everything, his "burrow" is around 80, everywhere else in the shade is around 85-95 and then in the sun it's well into the 100s...probably between 105-115. Is that too hot?! I'm in central Florida and this is just the beginning. Other people I know have their tortoises outside year round but idk if I am overreacting.
Fig turned 1 in January, Hermanns tortoise.

Add some tort safe bushes for deep shade. This will give a cooler spot. Also you can run misters or sprinklers to help cool it down.
The 80-95 temps are okay, the 105-115 is too hot. This is why deep shade would be good.

I forgot to include pictures in the first post. This is his area. I brought him back inside for now because although he was only out there an hour, every time I checked on him, he was in the same spot and hadn't moved. I temped him and he was 93 and ever since bringing him inside, he's stayed in his dark house. Currently he's at 86.

Such a pretty tortoise! With all that shade and a hiding cave too, I think he's okay at those temps.

I'd still want an insulated temperature controlled house for him to use for cold nights, hot days, and anytime it rains.

Wow, really? I was afraid of him not really having anywhere to go to cool down. Even his burrow at the heat of the day was 85. Maybe I am being a helicopter mom lol but I got so nervous seeing him in the same spot for an hour. He's usually a very active guy.
I also wanted to mention, this is just his daytime enclosure. Once I'm comfortable with it, he will come outside in the morning and then I'll bring him in at dusk every night.
