Hi there! Long time reader, first time poster. My girlfriend and I are getting our first tort soon (95% sure it'll be a Hermanns) , and could use some advice on a couple of things re. his table. I want to try to make his substrate as natural as possible and I was thinking of using topsoil. Also, rather than filling it up with plastic, I want to put some real plants in there. My concern is that he'll just munch his way through whatever we put in there and end up either overweight or eating something he shouldn't. Does anyone have much experience using real plants in tables? Have you ended up with a barren wasteland and a fat tortoise, or are they pretty good at sticking to a diet? Obviously there are some plants which shouldn't be in there (and I'll check which before I buy any), but are there any which you guys have had a bad experience with? Thanks!

Hello and Welcome:) Top soil is good, just be sure it's pesticide and fertilizer free. Live plants would be great. Check out the tortoisetable.org for edible ideas.

I put some ice plant in my tank. The hatchies nibble on it here and there but don't gorge on it.

I use spider plants in my indoor enclosure, solely for the fact that they are easy to clip and regrow. All my plants are potted so I can switch them out if they are getting too worn down. My torts don't mind nibbling on the spider plant but they don't eat it, mainly climb in it, burrow around it. They help keep the humidity in the tank up also.
