i just found out this species lives in the bay area and i have never seen one. anyone here ever caught one?

They are up here as well. Yes, we've caught many. Not good pets, hard to get to eat. Likely protected now too.

When I was taking part in a reptile survey we used multiple types of cover to attract reptiles. Tin sheets, black plastic, carpet samples, and plywood. By far the most productive was carpet. We found blue tails as well.
i have only seen 2 big snakes in my yard for 6 years of living here. gopher snake and a king snake.
A King! Lucky. Here's a great field guide. I suggest every enthusiast get one. 
We found sharp tail snakes, ring neck snakes and all manner of garter snakes.
Just hard to mark your finds on your phone in the field.

when i was 6 i found a 4 foot king snake!!!! i saw it multiple times after i released it. but them my EVIL neighbors killed it
