Greetings,

I am a brand new Sulcata Owner. I adopted a 10 yo Male Sulcata about 70 pounds.

Would love to connect with folks in the San Gabriel Valley as I have many questions about enclosures, soaking, etc.

Would love to check out some outdoor enclosures? How everyone is maintaining proper temperature, etc.

Thanks,

Cheers:)

Hi kingasif:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

May we know your name?

I'd love to see pictures of your big guy.

I'm sure there are folks on the forum who live near you, however, connecting with people who share the same interest is what the Tortoise Forum is all about. We don't need to live near you to help you.

I also have a large sulcata. And there are quite a few other members with them also. We're all very glad to answer your questions and talk sulcata!

Besides being on the forum and asking questions. I would suggest joining your local CTTC ( California Turtle and Tortoise Club) and go to the meetings you can also get question answered there.

Greetings to you!
Congrats on your newest family member. Make sure to post pics, we love pics here! I also have a sulcata, he does not weigh as much as your new tort. He is only 2 1/2 inches and will be 8 weeks this Saturday. Right now I have Wilbur (my tort) in a big plastic storage bin, I use Eco-Earth substrate, and I give him daily soaks for about 20 mins. I think that you probably want to keep your tort outside though :p Everyone here is super nice and very helpful.

Cheers to you:tort:

David should've mentioned to you that the CTTC meetings are held at the Arboretum in Arcadia...so that should be a great starting point for you!;)

Hello and welcome. I'm only about 45 minutes from you. Congrats on the new addition. For one that big, I find it easiest to stick some pressure treated 2x4s in the ground and attach two rows of 2x12s to them. You can paint your wood any color you like and even the big ones can't wreck it. Or you can just make the whole yard his... :D

For heat, I just build big boxes and heat them various ways, but always with a thermostat for temp control. Here are a couple of ideas for you:
http://www.tortoiseforum.org/Thread-The-Mother-of-All-Tortoise-Boxes#axzz1TRAR9ziw
http://www.tortoiseforum.org/Thread-Daisy-s-New-Enclosure#axzz1TRAR9ziw

Both of these ideas are the result of many years of trial and error and a constantly evolving attempt to give them "optimal" conditions.

Here are some old photos of my enclosure. Still using the same one.

Here's another old thread with even more ideas. I'm still using the wooden one in the second two pics for my lone male Bert. That style would probably be the easiest and simplest for you. Its 4x4' by 2' tall.

Good luck. Let us know what you decide. Happy reading and clicking...

Hi Dean,

I am near JPL, NW Pasadena. I know about the CTTC meeting and plan on attending the next one.

Tom do you soak your 66 pound tortoise. I was not sure if that was just for younger tortoises?

How big is your yard? Mine likes to roam. I read they like to wander up to a mile a day.
