Morning guys. i recently purchased a baby horsefield from a reptile shop. its the second day in and ive noticed very little movement and that they like to hide away in one of the littler hides closest to the lamp in his vivarium, he hasnt come out from this to eat or drink yet.i tried feeding it curly kale, rocket, a vitamin and calcium food topper and tortoise topper fruit and veg but to no avail. the temprature is 33.1c under the bulb, its a 4ft tank and the cooler side only feels slightly cooler. is this normal and is there anything i can adjust?

First of all NO fruit even as a topper. We need more info to be able to help you...how old? How are you keeping him? Substrate, lighting, humidity, temps? You've just moved him out of his familiar place to a new one...they get stressed out by that...all that information will help the experts to give you good advice

H and welcome,
How long have you had him? It could be that he is still settling in because torts hate change even if for the better and will often sulk for a while.
Having said that there's also the chance that you've been given the wrong advice about care and possibly been sold unsuitable equipment for the sake of profit. It seems that pet shops, breeders and even some non specialist vets worldwide know very little about looking after a tortoise. So this is the most up to date caresheet you'll find anywhere which will help you check you have all his living conditions right and if not to correct them - many of us have had to make changes because of starting off with bad advice from people we trusted.

Have a good read through that and ask as many questions as you like - everyone here is only interested in giving torts the best lives

If you post pictures of his enclosure and the lamps you are using members can help you make sure it's as safe as possible for your baby.

.........and forget the vitamins they can often do more harm than good and should be had from a good diet. Only a tiny pinch of calcium a couple of times a week is needed.
www.thetortoisetable.org.uk will help you find safe tort foods.

PS ignore the first question I've just noticed it's only your second day with him.
