Hello Everyone.
I am a new tortoise owner. Have been researching for about 6 months. I was considering a few types of tortoises but when I went to the expo and saw this guy I had to have him.
I know Marty's set up isn't perfect (would like him in a tort table and a longer space) but I do have the temps right in the hot and cool site, the 50/50 substrate. Thermometers and hydrometers, uvb with at least 7% and a basking bulb on the hot side, a hiding spot, good food (small amount of Mazuri tort food and a lot of dandelions and mustard greens, calcium d3, etc. I even made him a pen in the yard with pansies and clover, and greens (can't wait for it to get warmer). I have been giving him 15 minute soaks at night ( he seems to have been a little dehydrated). The video of him with the tomato was just a treat since we had just got him.
I got him this weekend from the White Plains NY Reptile Expo, and the seller wasn't sure of the age of the tortoise but said around 1 . He was basically just a kid working the table. Marty was very alert and super friendly, my only concern was not knowing his age. I attached a bunch of pictures from the last 3 days. The only thing you can't see is that he is 6 inches long (Shell only)and 6 inched wide.
I would love some opinions about the age and what type of Hermann's tortoise Marty is, I am assuming a western. Also , I was told he was a male and was curious about that as well. Also any ideas of how much bigger he may get. I read so many different sizes which is confusing me on his age. I didn't know how long it takes a Hermann's to get to Marty's size.
FYI, it may be easier to look at my website, it's a silly blog but the first one that comes up is all these photos of MArty and the videos. Instead of clicking on each pic its right there to scroll up and down with.
Thanks Again,
Heather
