Just found out I am allergic to coconut and since I have been using it for my substrate I don't want to take a chance on having an allergy attack one day from it. What is the best next substrate for a eastern box turtle besides coconut substrate.

Plain pesticide and fertilizer free dirt, cypress mulch. Others might think of more.

Because they like to bury themselves, I prefer to have dirt as the substrate for box turtles.

I also use dirt, mixed with peat moss to keep it loose. You could also put some leaf litter on one side or long fiber moss so they could dig and bury themselves.

When my turtles are young and in smaller enclosures, I use just long fibred New Zealand sphagnum moss for substrate. Thick enough for burrowing and kept damp. When adult size and a larger enclosure is needed you can add peat moss with the spahgnum moss since sphagnum moss can be expensive to replace regularly in a larger enclsoure.
