I thought I would show you my wee tort. (I'm currently in a name rethink)
He's amazing and I've been surprised by the absolute ton of personality contained in one shell. He's already charmed my friends and been a boss at the vet office- we ended up with 3 vets in on his check up because he was so happy and playful. He's been a delight since he arrived.

Old name was Brienne. I decided she was a she but further reading and I think she's too young to tell properly. She's only a year old :)

Where did you get her from and why do you think she's only a year? She's got a lot of pyramiding for a Russian, they don't seem to pyramid as easily as some others. If you purchased her from a pet store, they most likely are way off on her age. However, most wild caught ones are not pyramided.
She is a cutie and glad your really enjoying hef

Hi

I agree that the shell is is not in good condition.

Where did you get this tort from? How long is it?

Have you read the TFO Care Guides?

They're written by species experts working hard to correct the outdated information widely available and propagated by many pet stores and, sadly, some breeders and vets too.

You can use them to turn your practise into a center of excellence :)

I got her from a breeder in the UK. She's just over 2". In keeping her at the recommended parameters on the care sheets on here. I've had her a fortnight so still bedding in. What exactly is it about her shell you consider not good? My reptile vet said she was in great condition.

The shell is bumpy for one so young. It should be smooth. It has probably been started too dry.

The bumpiness will become less obvious as your tort grows. Make sure you're very careful with humidity and diet.

The care sheets I gave you are the gold standard :)

Thanks :) I have been working hard on humidity- she's on coir and I have given her a warm humid box too. She's shedding at the moment so she looks a bit scruffy :)

Scruffy is normal. Tortoises don't shed tidily like snakes; there are always tatty bits somewhere :)

Dump water into the substrate and mix it with your hands so it is damp, not wet, to raise the humidity.

At the moment She has a bit of shed skin hanginging at her jaw, it looks like a wee beard :) When I press my hand to the surface of the coir it it sticks to my hand with moisture. Very non scientific but my hygrometer is on its way
