Very Nice, I have several red ears, Never kept the rio grandes,are they as cold hardy as the RES ?

Yes, they are and they beg, too. You can raise them the same way. I have my 2 baby RES and my Rio Grandes in the same tank. Working out great. My RES babies and the Rio Grandes are gaining weight at the same rate
