I am creating a shelf for my tortoise using the cheapest materials possible. Muahaha (evil laughter). I am using a scrap piece of plywood from an old headboard, beloved Popsicle sticks, and the back of a picture frame. I'm hoping Ginger won't break through the fence or else I've got a problem. The back and two sides will have walls around the corners once I put it in the cage. Now I just need to cut it to size and make legs. Too bad I don't know how to use a saw. Maybe I can use an electric bread knife. :pshelfywelfy 009.JPG shelfywelfy 008.JPG shelfywelfy 007.JPG

It's cute. Hope it holds. Heres a kind of saw you might like using. It cuts by vibration. Good for those who don't like regular saws. This is a cheap one, around 30-40 bucks. They can go into the hundreds. I had to add it, it's fun to play with and it gives little dust, so cutting in the house isn't a big mess for little projects.

Hmmm... I may have to get me one of those. I didn't even know there was such a thing. Thanks!

Nah ! Get a Dremel tool , it cuts , sands , drills , buffs , polishes and all kinds of stuff for small projects ! Looks like this , you can usually find a kit with a bunch of attachments for under 50 bucks !

Oh boy... now I'm not sure which one to get. ;) These suggestions really are great, though. I'm seriously looking into them! Anymore tool suggestions are welcome!

I agree with Speedy. Look on Amazon, There are several brands you can get, Dremel is the best but there's a few other brands good too. These come in handy for everything.

I just looked it up on Amazon. Do either of you so happen to have a direct link for a wood cutting dremel kit? I want the dremel and a wood cutting wheel... but it doesn't seem like they sell them together. I'm pretty excited about this!! I'm going to keep looking.

They are all on the same principal ! I have had my Dremel tool , I would guess going on 10 years never any problems. It is the most versatile tool I own !

It looks like the one you show has the blades and chuck to hold them . They even make little battery operated ones , if you don't intend to use it a lot ! ;)

Maybe everyone else knows which species Ginger is, but I'm curious. Even the smallest of my juveniles would knock down your construction.

She's a sturdy Russian. There is going to be glass on all sides, the biggest Popsicle stick wall is just to keep her visually happy to stop her from clunking. The main thing that needs to hold is the ramp. So you think she'll break it? *Sigh* Your probably right... but I think I want to give it a try anyway. ;) I'm hoping she'll just walk up the ramp and not try to dig into the sides. Hoping. Wish me luck! ;)

A Dremel type tool will pay for itself.
You'll end up finding all sorts of uses for one.
That one for $20 seems like a good deal. That brand name has been around for a while, too.
You'll love it.

I'm officially convinced. I'm going to get one! I discovered that my dad has a dremel, and I went to borrow it, but he insisted that the piece of plywood I was going to cut was too thick. My brother ended up cutting it with a jigsaw. I'm so grateful someone did it for me! I still want the dremel (or one of the other types of "dremel") because I can already think of many uses for it.

Oh... and one last thing. After all of the work of sawing, screwing, nailing, and attaching a hinge, I discovered that the shelf will not fit in the cage because there is a "lip" over the top of the cage, preventing me from lowering the shelf inside where it is wider. It's difficult to explain, but now I'm going to have to unscrew all four legs and perhaps the ramp in order to get it into the cage. *Sigh*. I still hope to get it done tomorrow. It looks amazing, I just have to get it in!

Looks amazing, I love it! I'm still working on mine, but I'll post pictures hopefully tomorrow when it's finished. How are the popsicle sticks working for you? Does your tort push against them?
I finished it late last night, so she didn't get chance to test it. I have literally just woke her up so we will see! I will put her food dish up there to encourage her to go up. I'll give you an update
