Hi There- I have a tortoise, his name is Alix:) At the time of his purchase, we were told he was a Mediterranian Tortoise but no one seems to have information about this species. Is this such a species or is this also known under another name? We are thinking about getting a friend for him and looking at a Sulcata. Are they compatible? Any help would be great! Thank you.

If you post a photo Danny or someone experienced with i.d'ing can help tell you about your tortoise. Here is a care sheet for the "Mediterranian Spur Thigh" (http://www.chelonia.org/Articles/iberacare.htm). If you get another tortoise, it should be quarantined for several months (I quarantine for up to 12 months). Also, most keepers will tell you that mixing species of tortoises is not a good idea for several reasons, including pathogens that make a different species sick from another one. Because Sulcatas reach large sizes, it could be dangerous for a smaller tort to be in the same enclosure.

Usually the term "Mediterranean" is used to describe the area of the world that a number of different species of tortoises are found. While they're captive care husbandry is similar some do have a few different requirements so it is important to know exactly what species you have.
Photos would help the I.D. process 100%!

You'll have to post a picture of his bottom shell (plastron), so we can give a go at sexing him. If he is a male, than your better off keeping him alone. Tortoises don't get lonely like we do, so they don't mind at all living alone. :)

Hi Cassidy:

Wow! 9 years old!! Good for you to be online and researching your tortoise.

to the forum!

Alix is commonly called a Greek tortoise. But there are several different kinds of Greek tortoise, so in your research, you should use the latin name that Danny provided for you.

Please allow Alix to be an only child! Male tortoises are better off when they are alone.
