Looking to adopt a sulcata or a red footed tortoise. I have done lots of research and have a 30 acre field for them to roam while I observe them and a place for them at night or when unmonitored that is a huge back yard fenced with burried wire. I know i will need to reinforce it but it wont take too long to do that if one is foun
d. if they are smaller I have a table for them to be in when they can't be monitored outside. Hoping to find one that's younger but not a hatchling. But I'm open to whatever. Willing to offer a reasonable fee. Thought it was best to try to help.one instead of buying.

There is a large Sulcata Rescue in TX ..... can't remember the name right now ... they are actually members here. You really need to start local and then expand your range, animal shelters in TX seem to be always full.

I have looked at shelters and have not found any. I did look at a rescue here but they didn't have any without medical issues. I'm not wanting to drive halfway around the world for one. I'm hoping someone from the central texas area may have found themselves in a position where they are looking for someone to help and step in. If not I will find a reputable breeder. Just trying to see if one needs a home first.

Turtle Rescue of Long Island ships to southern (warmer) states. It might be a good idea to get on her (Julie) adoption list.

The best advice I have is to have everything set up before hand. There is going to be some tortoise proofing, outdoor enclosure building etc. needed before you can take in a tortoise. Good luck!
Yes definitely second this! Also be very wary of care information outside of this forum, there’s soooo much outdated stuff!

For a red foot, if indoors will need a closed chamber as they are a lifelong humid species which cannot be maintained with an open top table. For a sulcata small enough to need to be indoors, same applies.

Hopefully this thread I made will be useful to look over! It covers equipment, levels, importance of a closed chamber for younger tortoises(only way to maintain the humidity you need), appropriately maintaining the humidity, substrates, there’s lots of visual examples for everything and a really handy diet link to check out! If going with a greenhouse, the lower the ceiling height, whilst still allowing for recommended bulb height, the better!

This is the one for red foots🙂

This includes some different closed chamber options, some more efficient than others, bare in mind the size, if they’d be spending a significant amount of time in there, it needs to be big

This is some inspo for adult set ups, both indoors and out

Lastly, probably the most important, this one is also really good to familiarise yourself with, it’ll help you avoid the wrong bulbs, substrates, housing etc, I always encourage double checking purchases on the forum too before buying

Hope they help! I’d definitely suggest keeping an eye on places like Craigslist, one is bound to come up eventually, just be aware many haven’t had the best start so may need some extra tlc❤️

Welcome to the forum!!🐢💚

Thank you. And yes this is why I am waiting. Different animals need different care. I'm not going to permanently put something in the ground to be best for one then end up with the other. All the set up will be able to be done relatively quickly.
Look forward to see what you come up with once you decide on either species! Do post photos if you can!🥰

I understand that but it won't be a long process to do once we know which tortoise we will be getting. It will make a difference in what we do. Thank you.
Hello from Central Texas!
It will be a huge reptile Expo in Dallas on December 14th and 15th. Several tortoise rescues will be there if you want to check with them.....

Thank you i have checked and have not seen any in my area.
I mean just post a wanted ad. Several times I struck out. But twice I received multiple tortoises. Including perfectly healthy and beautiful ones.

Our own Ryan. @Southernreptiles SELLS quality Redfoot. I understand that you're primarily looking to adopt. But he's in south Palm Beach county. He ships. And you'll be guaranteed a healthy, we'll started animal. Probably any size you like since he raises his own tortoises and turtles for the most part.
I will personally vouch for him. And have done so many times.
I've also purchased two or three of his over the years
