Greetings all,
I am in Montana. I am looking to adopt a Russian tortoise. I'd rather not do a pet store. I'm in Helena. Any info, thoughts or steering me to a great situation would be great! I hope to help a tort find a forever home!
You guys rule!
Cheers!

Have you checked your local shelter or craigslist?

Also see if there are any reptile specialist veterinarians in your area. That's how I got my box turtle, and I was also offered a Russian at the same time. I couldn't take it because I already had one though.

Northwest Seed and Pet in Spokane WA has a couple of adult females. They don't order tortoises to sell, but take found or unwanted tortoises for people. I have bought a couple from them. Would be happy to go and take pictures for you or provide more info if you're interested. These girls need forever homes.

That would be most gracious of you!
Do you have an idea of cost or if they would ship to Montana?

They will not ship. The one at the store downtown is $149? ish. I am pretty sure. I think the one at the north store is the same. I would be willing to meet you in Missoula if you wanted to contact the store and purchase. Let me know if you want pics. They have a website so you could contact them directly.... I am rambling. Let me know what I can do to help I guess is what I am saying lol.

I would love a pic or two and if you have some indication if size that would help.
I have a 36x18x18 tank with a screen... To start off with.
Maybe we can see if this might work!
Kindest regards
John

They are both adults. Over 6 inches, i am sure. Probably 7ish. A tank is not big enough for a Russian. They need a table type enclosure, at least 8feet by 4 feet. Bigger is better. Will you also have an outdoor enclosure in summer? I will try to make time this week to get pics, and post them here. There are a lot of enclosure ideas in the enclosure section of this forum.

Since you are in Montana @John Peskey , I happen to know that @TortoiseRN has a few baby Russian tortoises left. He incubated them at temperatures that should result in females. You could send him a PM and see if you can get one from him - baby tortoise care is different from adult tortoise care, but is also very rewarding! Plus, this way you would know for sure that you are getting a captive bred little one...
