I visited here today and there was a show and tell with a small tortoise. We were told it was a seven year old Sulcata that they'd bred at the zoo. It was tiny, no more than seven inches long! He was badly pyramided. I didn't know what to do. Generally it's a good zoo which does a lot of valuable conservation work. I am hoping that the young woman who was taking about the tortoise just got the age wrong but the pyramiding was quite bad. What would you do?

I went to a zoo recently and all of their tortoises were in cages with other reptiles, lizards etc.
Not sure you can do anything?

All you can do is be polite and humble. Print out whichever of our stickies would be helpful and present it to the reptile-keeper.

Thank you, I'll do that. It's such a shame, we've always really enjoyed the zoo before [emoji20]

They tried that they had specialist vets looking after their animals and that it may have been a rescue add they didn't know which tortoise is seen. That either me add it suggested there is more than one with bad pyramiding [emoji17] I copied the care sheet and sent it to them. No reply so far.

Sorry, so many typos! They replied.. and they didn't know which tortoise is seen.. that also concerned me as it suggested there is more than one pyramided tortoise!

The zoo phoned, basically I don't know what I'm talking about I've had my sulcata for 15 months they've had them for years! She said they are a desert species and that the pyramiding will even out once he gets outside. They have 'access to humidity' but don't need it. I'll just have to hope for the best for their tortoises and I won't be going back to that zoo now [emoji20]

Some people will just never accept advice. You tried.
Thank you. She also said I should be aware that they are a social species and I need to introduce another tortoise before Goliath got too big to accept another one! I won't be doing that, do I guess I'm not taking her advice either [emoji57]

Unfortunately I think some zoos are in it for the money and not the animals. Not all of them though.

I'm sure they'll be furious [emoji57]
Maybe a moderator @YvonneG should take this thread down before they sue me for what they'll see as libel!
Sorry folks [emoji20]

But I don't see where you've made any false statements?

They think that the tortoise wasn't pyramided and that they are looking at it perfectly, do my suggestion that they're not could be seen as libel, I guess. I only named then because I know there are some people local to the zoo on the forum and I hoped they'd be able to reassure me about the care. [emoji57]

Here are my two, Elijah, a ten year old hermans and Goliath a 17 month old Sulcata. Both enjoying the summer sun today. Hopefully I'm doing a good job with them both [emoji4] 20180624_121623.jpeg20180624_121601.jpeg

Thank you, I'm very fond of them both. Funny characters.
