Hi!

Day lights should run for at least 12 - 14 hours a day. At night, it depends what species and age your tortoise is to determine if they need night heat.

What species? What age and size? What sort of heating and lighting equipment?

What you are attempting to do is provide optimal conditions for your given species. There are many ways to accomplish this and a wide variety of equipment to choose from that can help you.

Your heat bulb/basking lamp is meant to simulate the sun for when they are indoors. When the "sun" is up, there should be UV too. Just make sure you aren't using one of the coil type cfl bulbs. Those can sometimes burn their eyes.

Hi Joe. It should be dark at night. Both the UV and the heat lamp should be used during the day. Neither at night.

Night temps are best maintained by using a ceramic heating element set on a thermostat. This keeps it dark at night, but still warm.

There are many types of heat lamps and UV lamps available. We could offer better tips if we knew more specifically what it is you are using there.

Tortoises do get parasites, but you really should take a stool sample to a vet to check to see if he needs to be de-wormed.
