Keeps going in his hide.

Is it normal for my redfoot to spend a lot of time in his hide? I'm just using half a shoebox cut in half and put it in one of his corners so it's nice and dark, and he's spent like the whole day in there. Also is it okay if his waters warm? It's under the basking lamp.

Check you temps, he may be to hot and the hide might be the only comfortable place. Also, your water can be warm, however I wouldn't put it right under the basking, could get too hot and also the tort would always have to do in the water to bask. What size enclosure to you have? Looks too small and not very tort friendly. Build a bigger enclosure and put some plants in it to make him feel more secure, which is another reason he could be hiding all the time.

Yeah I shoulda bought a bigger enclosure.. Didn't do enough research and the pet shop didn't seem to recommend anything bigger. Ugh. I already spent a lot on the tank, thinking about getting a storage bin or something, I have one in the garage.. it's 2 and a half feet long and a foot and a half wide, not really any longer bug 6 inches wider then the tank. would that be okay for now?

And also is the soaking dish really necessary? I keep seeing tortoise vids where they don't have one but have a pretty big enclosure.

I would get one with lower sides.
