I think it IS a sulcata, just a very VERY dark one. One of the main reasons I think this is because of the lack of the nuchal scute.

Doesn't look like a sulcata looks like a florida gopher tortoise.
I believe they are illegal to have and breed or sell.
Look them up and read on the laws of them.

Even the gopher tortoises are light when young though.. I just think this is a beautiful extra dark baby sulcata. see the lack of the nuchal scute in the front?

Yep, very dark sulcata, not a Chaco. But these have got to be the darkest sulcatas I've ever seen and I want to see what they look like as they grow. I'd love there to be a melanistic sulcata morph.....it would help bring balance the force with all the ivory sulcata's out there.

Its just stained. Look at the black soil in the first pic with the red lid. One of the many reasons I say not to use soil.

Stained as Tom said but I recently in person saw a SUPER dark clutch where all but one were really dark with just a small amount of lighter color def sulcata just really dark
