I just picked up this tortoise an hour ago. He was listed on CL as a "box tortoise". Hermanns or Greek im ok with the $75 I paid.
Is he Hermanns or Greek? 4-7/8" scl.

Eastern Hermann's, Testudo hermanni boettgeri. Looks like a female from the tail view. But a side view of it would be better. Either way, you got a great looking tortoise at a great price!

Did they mention whether they were feeding it like a "box" tortoise?

WoW that's way more than I would spend on a tortoise!

It seems odd that they would cost so much is Spain given that you are not all that far from their home range. Im grateful to have found this one and will be looking for 2 more in the spring.

Its because there are very few breeders and as its one of the very few species that looks like a greek and can be bought legally with paperwork, the breeders can put the price tag as they want.

Thats interesting about the cost of Hermanns in Spain. I did read somewhere that it is illegal to keep certain species of tortoise in Spain as a measure to prevent them being taken from the wild. There are still some Hermanni Hermanni tortoises in Spain but I believe they have been reduced to a few protected areas like the national park.

The Eastern Hermann of course is not native to Spain.

It would be easy to breed Hermann tortoises in Spain without the need for any of the technology I have to use to keep mine happy. Maybe I should move there and become a Hermann breeder!

Our poster has got themsleves a nice Eastern Hermann. How could anyone think this was a boxie? The mind boggles........
