I have a sulcata and was wondering if you should put something in the cage to control the humidity. Right now I have nothing and he is doing fine. The people at the pet store said I didn't need anything but I trust you guys with experience.

How big is your sulcata? If its a young tort, then definately boost the humidity in the tank.

Then yes you will definately want more humidity. You can use a fogger or a humidifier. What do you have your tortoise in right now? A table, tank? If we see your setup we can help you figure out what may work better at boosting your humidity. If its open top you will probably want to make a lid that covers most of it to trap the heat and humidity

ImageUploadedByTortoiseForum1365362807.184152.jpg It's a small dog crate with wood boards around the side. This summer I think I'm going to take a persons idea of of here.

First he needs a much larger enclosure. One with solid sides. You will never get humidity up in a dog crate. Get a very large plastic tote box from Home Depot or the like. Put coconut coir, cypress mulch or plain dirt in it. Cut holes in the lid for the UVB light (not the coil type) and the CHE for heat to show through. Line the rim of the holes with tin foil and you won't have the p,attic melt. Basking, 95+ over all day and night temps 80 with humidity at 80%. Read Toms threads below in my post. You want to get your enclosure as close to his as possible.

Its not just one parameter (humidity, in this case) that you need to look at. Its a whole combination of things. You need to be simulating the hot humid African rainy season.

If you click the links in my signature and start reading some stuff, it will catch you up to speed.

Yes. Pour water on the substrate to increase humidity. You can also leave a water dish in the enclosure to add humidity. To keep the humidity, once you have generated it, cover the top of your enclosure. Be sure that the temperature doesn't get too high as a result.

And you must never let your temp drop below 80 if you are keeping it humid in there.

I don't keep stars, so I don't know if this works for stars or not. Try sending a PM to Neal and ask him how he keeps his baby stars. He may have some insight for you.
