That looks like a nice one. I bet you could bargain him down the price quite a bit.

We live on 1/4 front yard, house is in the middle on 1/4acre and the back is 1/3-1/2 acre. Our CDT's have had run of the back but we are going to change.that. Half and half.is the plan and will start building in the next day or.two!!

I really don't want to sound rude, but
1) Your wife is not happy about you adopting him and
2) You don't even have a set up ready for him?
You're getting him tomorrow but you're not going to work
on his set up for a day or two?

And shame on some of you, at $250 you all still want to dicker the
price down? All the others I see in Cal on CL are $400, $650 and $850.
And you want to try and get her to take less when she is already
asking for less than normal?

1 - Soooooo I over exaggerated a bit about my wife, shoot me :)
2 - We have many enclosures already in the backyard that can house this new fella - Several areas for shelter, shade, sun, and watering - Including a nice barn
3 - and finally, I didnt chew them down, emailed them the asking price

;)

I assume the person selling it was not forced at gunpoint to take a lower offer. But yes you did not sound rude at all, not one bit, not in the least. Is my sarcasm seeping through, or should I say more.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and perception. You voiced yours. Here is mine:

1. Nobody's spouse is thrilled with everything they do. My wife does things all the time that I wish she wouldn't. I still love her, and she's got to do what she needs to do to be happy in this life. This is all part of the compromise of sharing your life with someone who has thoughts and feelings of their own. Letting her get away with her stuff is also how I justify my next tortoise or giant enclosure too. :D I would venture a guess that Sam's wife will use this as bargaining power to get something SHE wants now. Come on Sam, how about those new granite counter tops she's been asking for...
2. There really is not all that much set up needed for a sulcata in Sam's area for a sulcata in the summer. A single shade tree or shed in a fenced yard is adequate for a few days or weeks during this time of year. Really, that is Sam's issue to work out. Why would you even worry about it? The man has never shown any incompetence at tortoise husbandry...
3. You are wayyyyyyy off base on the price thing. This person should be lucky they are able to give away a big male sulcata for free here in CA. They are given away for free regularly here and in AZ too. In fact, I did not pay for any of my current adult sulcatas. I have not paid for any regular sulcatas since my very first one in 1991. And just because some other person who does not understand the market at all asks way too much for their tortoise, does not justify Sam spending more than necessary to acquire HIS new tortoise. What is wrong with bargaining? That is not shameful. That is smart business. Now when YOU are ready to buy something, anything really, call me. I'm going to make up whatever price I want and shame you into just paying it without question. That be okay?
