You know, chickens lay all kinds of eggs other that the Grade AA ones we see at the grocery store. Youngsters lay eggs that have no yolk, or have only yolk. Especially when stressed, any chicken can lay eggs in all stages of production. And I believe the yolk is the first part of the egg that is formed, before the other layers are added. This is just a mistake by the reproductive machinery, nothing more.

So is it just a big yolk in a membrane?...squishy like an egg with no shell?

I have seen broken eggs being laid and discolorations of many sorts but never anything like that. Is it like a hard boiled yolk? or is that the shell color?

No its like a raw chicken egg yolk. Just the yolk. I could pop it easily

I wonder if it is natures way of getting rid of something that isn't right. Genetically flawed like a miscarriage.

I have seen chickens do that, and I heard ostrich can do something simular. It could be a genetic trait, or something made it not shell.

My thoughts as well. There is a reason behind everything.

Back when I bred snakes I used to see different ones do some what similar. And boas (have live birth) would produce what we called slugs. Probably just as others have mentioned, just an unfertilized egg or a flawed egg.

I don't think it's anything to worry about though.

Did you try PM'ing him? He usually responds pretty quick. I also vote for low calcium, it just seems that the outer shell of the egg is not developing...never heard of a tortoise miscarriage. Are the pair related at all? I have no idea really either.

This most likely happened because of stress. Someone or something has stressed her a bit and she just spontaniously laid just a yolk with most likely some white. I've seen it happen with just yolks and yolks covered with the membrane but no shell.
Yolks are valuable caloric resources and aren't just spit out willy nilly without a reason.
