Hi guys,

My names Rachel and I've just bought my first Tort. He's a baby Horsefield and he is so cute! I've called him the great Om. This forum seems really great for ideas and hints and tips, and everyone seems really friendly so I'll definately be using it for advice.
My tort is so tiny, and I'm a little worried, he seems really shy (I only got him Saturday). When i get back from work in the evenings he just peers out of his log at me, I guess he's eating and moving during the day as his food seems all shifted around and spread about the cage and I've watched him eat a quarter of cherry tomato which I gave him as a treat. Is it just initial nerves, and he'll get better over time?

Thanks all, and pleasure to meet everyone!

Rachel

Hi Rachel and welcome! A little Russian how sweet! Hope we get to see a picture of him soon. So far, he is sounding very much like a little tortoise who has had some stress and major life changes. It may make you feel better to go into the proper section and tell us how you have him set up. ;) Is he your first tortoise? :tort:

Hi,

Yes he is! He is absolutely adorable. I've put the first picture of him I've taken up with this post, and I will go and explain his set up in the proper section as I appreciate all the help I can get to make sure he's happy!

Rachel, OM looks adorable! I might suggest you change the current bedding for something else. Those pellets tend to be dry, hard to walk on, and get moldy easy. I would go with coir/sand, a bio substrate, soil, or cypress mulch.
Just my thoughts.

Hi,

Thanks for letting me know, when I bought him he came with housing pack which included the pellets and on initial reading it does seem that they're not the most desirable thing, so once I have some cash I will definately be looking at adjusting certain things in his habitat, and I think the bedding will be the priority!

Welcome
First let me say russians (horsefields) are awesome. It is normal for babies to be shy at first, they will soon warm up and eventually you may be asking for ways to have him not be so friendly. :)
