Hey tortoise fam I needs some advice on a couple of things. One, I recently noticed my hatchling tortoise is falling asleep under his basking light, the thermometer says it’s about 92-95 degrees. Is that too hot for him to be sleeping under. He seems happy; I just wanted to make sure.

Second is a diet question. Is Timothy Hay okay to feed a sulcata? My hatchling seems to love it. Also Is Timothy hay better or is Meadow Hay?

Thanks for your help!

If he is sleeping under the heat lamp it is an indication that temps are too cool. Try turning up your ambient heat to discourage this carapace desiccating habit.

Hay is too coarse and difficult to eat for babies in my opinion. Save the hard dry hay for when the tortoise is bigger and use freshly sprouted grass, weeds and leaves for a baby. I prefer orchard grass hay or Bermuda hay.
