welcome to the forum! its best if you make your own thread so more people can see it :) tortoises can be very expensive when you just start off. but it gets less expensive as you have them. its best to make your own enclosure, which can be a lot less expensive. what species are you getting?

Look in the enclosure section and you'll get lots of ideas. Plenty of people use the plastic storage bins, even strapping multiple bins together. They don't have to be expensive to work. It's the lights and stuff you need that are going to cost you the most money. The initial set up is a bit pricey but they are easy to operate once your all set up.

Hi Tortoise_love, and welcome to the Forum!!

You can buy a pretty big plastic bin for less than $30. If your tortoise is bigger, you can buy two bins and put them together. What kind of tortoise are you getting?

Well I don't really care I live in Toronto (Canada) so it's pretty cold but I'm just looking for something 3-6 inches.
every species needs different care requirements. i think the best species for the size you are looking for is a russian tortoise. they are small but like all tortoises they need large enclosures. the minimum cage for a russian tortoise is 4ft by 8ft.

Craigslist is your friend . Look up free stuff you can turn into a enclosure . We have a free stuff section here on TFO also . But for one tortoise its cheap . For two fifty plus pounds sulcatas, one ten pound sulcata, five red foots, two leopard tortoises, and four turtles not so cheap. I would get a box turtle to start of cheap with . They sleep the winter away saving you cash on heating . In the summer outdoor enclosure . You can adopt a box turtles for free . And all you need is 4 -8 foot 2 by 12 screwed together to make a enclosure . Then use wire and 2/4 to make a top .

Russian tortoises are usually pretty easy to find at rescues. Or from craigslist etc. A cheap enclosure can be made with a large plastic kiddie pool if you can find one this time of year :), or a bookshelf laid on its back and the shelves taken out, you could even put two of them together for a bigger enclosure. check out the secondhand stores in the want ads for enclosure ideas or build one yourself if you have the talent.
The lighting will definitely be the most expensive part because you tortoise will be inside for a good part of the year. sometimes Amazon has good sales, cheaper than the pet stores. where were you looking to get your tortoise from? Were you at the pet store? Most pet stores give you terrible advice and talk you into buying a lot of stuff that you do not need or may even be harmful to the tortoise.
