Hello everyone, my name is Liz and I recently adopted the cutest little sulcatas! Rex and Tiki. I am trying to do as much research as possible to give these little guys, or girls the best life possible.

This is Rex, I am concerned if there is anything wrong since "his" shell looks much different than Tiki's. Can anyone give me any info on that. I have read on here that the extra scute could be from being incubated to hot and maybe "he" is a "she" I don't care either way I just want a healthy tortoise :]

This is Tiki and she loves to do the splits in there food bowl :]

Any info or feedback I can get on these little ones would be much appreciated and I will post more pictures that aren't terrrible cell phone shots soon! Thanks

Hi Liz:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

They look a little dry in the pictures, but other than that, the shells look ok to me.

Hello and welcome. Split scutes do tend to occur more at higher incubation temps and higher incubation temps do tend to produce females. If they are clutchmates, they are likely both female. I'd get a third or raise them separately. Pairs are often problematic.

Here's a care sheet:

Thanks for the info, they are clutchmates and we actually got three of them, one of them stays with my mom most of the time though. We do have tortoise dates quite frequently as she doesn't live to far away. lol Just curious, whats the problem with pairs?
