Heat mat when sleeping

Hi,

I am new to keeping tortoises. I have recently bought a Greek spur thighed tortoise who is under a year old.
He has a heat/uv lamp which is on for 12 hours a day in his main area.
He also has a heat mat which is taped to the roof of his sleeping area( as instructed to do by the shop I bought him from).
The heat mat is on 24/7, is this necessary?

He sleeps a lot but seems happy and eating.

Hello and welcome. What is the temperature in the sleeping area?

You are quickly going to learn that pet shops have it all wrong. Start here and look for the temperate species care sheet near the bottom.
