Hi, I’m new to the forum.
My son has a 10 year old Marginated tortoise and a few days ago he started burrowing and hasn’t moved since. He appears to be unresponsive to touch. How do I know if he is in hibernation or if he has died?

At the beginning of the week he was moving around and drinking

If you haven't prepared him to brumate then get him out and put him in a warm water soak. Keep him in it for at least half an hour. Keep him and water warm the whole time and watch him the whole time.

I soaked home and have been keeping him warm. He now has gunk coming out of his mouth. I think he has died.

I am sorry about this. How long have you had the tortoise, and have you any idea why he died?

I have had him 8 years. Absolutely no idea what has happened. He was moving around a couple of days beforehand, drinking and eating a little (he always tends to slow down with his eating at this time of year). He made a burrow and that was the last I saw him move. Nothing has changed with his environment, he had water, food, clean bedding and was kept warm as always. He was my son’s and he is absolutely heartbroken 😢

These are the details Wellington asked for, that may help to determine the reason he died. Can you provide these to see if anything stands out?
