Hi everyone I have been reading your forum looking for tips on how best to look after this poor lost leopard tortoise and it has been really useful, so thanks.
She was found in a field in Wales UK, by a friend about 5 weeks ago and all atempts to find her owner have failed. I have been looking after her for the last 3 weeks and bought her a basking lamp, an enclosure so she could graze outside on some turf I laid for her. She has also been checked at the vets. She is quite healthy at he moment it seems but there is pyramiding on her shell which the vet says was down to a poor diet when younger (she is now about 10 inches long and weighs almost 2 kg)- he thinks she may have been dumped as leopards are harder than other types to look after. She also has a foot missing but this is an old injury which has healed and she walks very well on it. My dilema is that although I was only looking after her until finding a new home, I have become quite attached to this little character and would love to keep her but I am worried that I can't provide the correct environment long term. I couldn't leave her outside with heating when I go back to work after my holidays as my garden isn't secure, but I have read that some of you keep them indoors, so how do you manage this arrangement on a full time basis? All advice welcome. Thanks

Your vet needs to catch up. Pyramiding is not caused by diet, its caused by growth in condition that are too dry. This has been known for years, and its an indicator of your vets state of knowledge about tortoises.

Here is a care sheet for leopards. Basically you'll need to build a very large chamber to maintain good conditions for your leopard.

We have a forum member here, username @Yourlocalpoet who has a gorgeous healthy leopard tortoise in the UK. I would try to message her for specific tips on keeping a leopard in your climate.

Thank you Tom, I guess finding good tortoise vets are all part of the learning process but the receptionist did tell me he was a specialist - certainly cost me enough! Meanwhile as an accidental carer I will continue to do my best for this torty until I decide what to do in its best interest.

Hello, Lyn. I read your intro post before. I'm glad you still have the tortoise. I really understand getting attached to animals that just happen to show up at my doorsteps. They needier they are, the harder to let them go.

Yes, I'd say that the majority of us keep our torts indoors most of the year. I'm in Central Canada, so I have to house my guys indoors for a good 8 months of the yr. My guys, Hermann's tortoises, are much smaller than Leopards and will never be as big, but I have 2 that must be housed separately. Bottom line is that it can be done.

Tom's links should cover all the details. And lots of people here are great at troubleshooting, if there are any unique issue you come across.

Take care and post lots of pictures. ;)

Thanks Jabuticaba
I do have some lovely photos already and will post some asap. I would love to keep my lost soul but only if I think I can provide the correct long term conditions it wouldn't be fair on her otherwise. At the moment we are just making do until I am sure the owner doesn't turn up - but it looks doubtful. She is living in a shower room which has a CH radiator in it and after basking under her light she makes straight for the kitchen door to go out. Unfortunately its been very cold, wet and windy today thanks to Bertha crossing the Atlantic so she's been confined to the house. Not ideal I know - but needs must at this stage hopefully it won't affect her too much. Goodness knows how long she was wandering in the field so its got to be better for her with me at the moment than being out in all weathers and temps.

When I was sorting out my shed the other day and put the old pillow I use for kneeling on when doing DIY on the path, she really made me laugh when I found her stretched out on it enjoying the sun. Certainly likes her creature comforts!

All things considered she seems quite healthy and active - she's very nosey! Shes not very happy about being kept in today because of rain and cold wind, and has been pushing the kitchen door to get out. She is so strong I have to put lock on otherwise she can push it open -I may let her out for a short while later if it stays dry long enough.

My friend Jackie who found her did all the initial searches, she put up notices and asked neighbours in the area she was found, we contacted all local vets and even those much further afield with herpetologists who may have records of leopard tortoises (especially treatment for her foot) to see if they knew who may own her but sadly no results. I also took her to the RSPCA to see if she was microchipped and to report her found. Between us we have covered everything but to no avail, no one has reported her missing, I would be absolutely devestated to lose her if she was mine!
