Carrots and tomatoes are just fine once in a while. Brocolli isn't a good idea to feed much or at all.

Bell Pepper is fine. Carrots, Broccoli and Tomatoes should all be fed sparingly.

We got Calvin to take his panacu by putting it on a very thin slice of a grape tomato and then another thin half slice on top to mask a bit of the med odor.
Way easier than trying to force it in him. And even though is was a few days in a row, we felt the trade off for getting the meds in him without stressing him was worth the fact that it is not the best food.
We are also sprinkling his food with the probiotics from Carolina Pet Supply to help stabilize his system.

The panacu, is that for worms?
Is it possible to buy that somewhere? Is there something else you can give torts for worms?

Your vet will dispense Panacur (fenbendazole) if there are pinworms/roundsworms/adult stage GI nemotodes.

You can purchase it from http://beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/
But only administer under a COMPETENT HERP VET due to a positive fecal.
Also be sure to use the probiotics. The ones from Carolina Pet Supply are perfect! Can be at room temp.fine powder form. I put ours in a salt shaker sealed in a baggie and a few shakes and no mess:D

Does your guys have worms? I was surprised we could actually see them pass...yuck!

well, the vet did a fecal exam and gave a positive for worms. I took her in for one treatment but they said I needed to bring her back for another. I don't like to take her out in this weather if I can avoid it. Very cold here and the vets office is about 30 minutes away. I wanted to know if there is something I can give her to treat them and to prevent them from coming back. And what is probiotic?

Sorry for all the questions. Still a newbie. :)

Coldliz, Why not use ParaZap? It can be used as a preventative & treatment. Best of all it's all natural.

Thank You!!!

That seems much safer and better than the med from the vet. I would much rather use something natural. Thank You!!!

No problem! I made a big mistake once and purchased a WC Redfoot and I used ParaZap for her. I couldn't believe all the worms one poor tortoise could have. I know this stuff works.

Probiotics are all the different 'things-good bacteria' that balance out the intestional flora. Humans can eat yogurt or take supplements.
For any creature mammal or not on antibiotics it helps with the diarrhea etc. side effects. We give them to our kids too when they are ill or on antibiotics.

Careful with the Parazap...I thought there was one ingredient that was questionable for torts and turts? We used it with our beardie twice but the vet was concerned about...oh I can't remember now..."black something" maybe?

If you listed the ingredients here I bet someone could help out.

Not everything okay for reptiles is okay for torts.

Also search pumkin in the forum, it helps them pass worms.

The thing with the natural items I think they help pass the worms but not necessarily kill them off.

At any rate, keeping his cage clean is huge right now.

Why do you have to bring your guy in? Is it a shot they were administering?
Good luck:D

You are referring to Black Walnut. I found this info on the website:

Q: What are the ingredients?
A: Para-Zap is a unique combination of several natural ingredients targeted towards specific problems. Two of the main ingredients are wormwood and black walnut. Wormwood has been used medicinally to expel various types of intestinal worms for over 3500 years. Black walnut works against tapeworms, but is included because it's one of the mildest and surest laxatives, causing no nausea, irritation, or pain. The idea is to kill the worms/eggs, and then expel them.

Also, it does kill the parasites. From the website again:
Q: What does ParaZap do?
A: Para-Zap allows the body to rid itself of parasites. The worms, and their eggs die and are then expelled. It also allows the body to expel undigested protein which is the perfect environment for parasites in the intestinal tract.

I'm not sure why your vet wouldn't agree with ParaZap. I guess if you were to overdo it, it could cause Diarrhea.

Edited: To say that you are correct about Pumpkin. It does help expel worms. I'm not sure how effective it is for a serious case but it does help. I include it in my blends occasionally just for that reason.

No they are not administering a shot. According to them it's orally, they said they put a tube down her throat and give it to her like that. I asked about giving it to her at home, but they refused.

And just a note..I do spot clean her enclosure everyday and completely clean it and changes substrate about every two weeks. I also clean everything in the enclosure. I'm not sure how she got the worms to be honest. Must have had them when I got her. I haven't actually seen any myself.

Yep, it was the black walnut that had her concerned...I am not saying she was right...I would just double check it:)

I always feel like just because something is natural does not necessarily mean it is automatically safe/healthy...
marijuanna is natural;)

Did you make the tea or sprinkle it on the food?

Do you know what med they are giving? I agree that if you could do it at home...it would lessen the stress on her.
I did not mean to imply you kept her in a dirty enclosure...sorry...some folks do not realize that a clean enclosure means the tort will get better faster without a recurrance,

They gave her Pancur.

Sorry if my post came off the wrong way. I knew you weren't implying I kept her in a dirty enclosure. I just wanted to make note that I did clean regularly and mostly see if I was cleaning enough.

What doesn't make sense to me is that they were ok with me giving her injections for RI but not giving her something orally.
