I occasionally catch Duke, my juvenile red foot (6.5 inches) biting at the scales on his front legs. What is causing this behavior? Is it something I should be worried about? Or is it just an itch?

Sometimes redfoots get food in their scales, so they bite at them to get it out. Of course it could be an itch too :)

Thanks Mel, so its nothing to be too alarmed over? Just natural behavior?

Thanks Harley, Duke is a he and he's almost 7 inches across his plastron. I have a baby cherry head too named Dutch who is about 9 months old maybe a little bit smaller than a cup coaster

I wouldn't get worried unless they do it all the time and are biting the scales off, then I would take them to the vet.
