I noticed Tippie had a piece of plastic wrapper (like from a candy bar) in his mouth while grazing today, so I went to grab it from him. (Realization that I need to check my yard more) Well, when I went to grab it, he tucked himself in and made a hissing sound. Is that a normal thing? Also, I got the wrapper, no worries.
Oh and he pooped in his soak for the first today, so that was exciting

All tortoises make a hissing sound when they withdraw their head into their shell during a startle response.

yea, its because when they pull their head in fast, it compresses their lungs and the air is coming out fast. my yellow bellied slider does it too
