I wouldn't buy them either. However if I knew the person did not kill the torts/turts for the shells, I wouldn't want to, well trunk him. :D

I don't have a problem with shells. Our club uses quite a few for display when we do a turtle show. I would not buy them myself, but for piratical reasons,

I would imagine as long as it is not a CDT or pond turtle it is legal.

I'm not in the market, so I haven't researched the legality side of it, but I think it would be cool to have one of these in my office though I don't think I would get it from someone on craigslist. As much as I can, I'd try to get one from a reputable source where hopefully the death of the animal was "natural".

If I could be sure that they were obtained from torts that died of natural causes, I would still be uneasy about it, but since there's hardly any way that could be verified, I am distrustful of their origins and unhappy to see that those are for sale.

I know quite a few keepers who keep their turtle/tortoise's shell after they die.

I have in the past been lent CDT shells for educational purposes for students for field trips displays as well as for educational purposes for going to some of the schools sharing about the wildlife and plants of the Mojave Desert...but the shells were on a loan basis as they are still owned by the state (CDTs laws prohibit the sale or ownership of even the shell)

I, personally, would not give someone money for a turtle nor tortoise shell...would not want to be the supply for a demand I want no part of...again, my personal issues :D:D

The purse is way creepy...hey let me reach in and get my keys....ick :p

I wouldn't buy those shells in particular (lets face it, CL is sketchy even at it's best) but I don't feel like there is anything inherently wrong with it either. I have an aunt who has been drying out and persevering sea horses since she started her salt water tank a few decades ago. One day she intends to make something out of them, and while some people might find that upsetting, I don't think it is the worst way to honor them either. When you think about it those seahorses (or in this case, those shells) represent a huge investment of a persons time, love and money.

My first gut reaction was uneasyness..

Personally, I wouldn't buy them because I don't have the need to do so.

IF I was someone that wanted/needed to buy turtle shells I'd be asking that reseller a million questions...

My ex-mother-in-law had some cut-rate taxidermist stuff several of her deceased dogs and they, to this day, "decorate" her living room...subsequent dogs have gnawed previous dogs up a bit, but she still has them... :(
