Closing debates

A lot of the debates are usually closed (especially the old ones), is it because they are too controversial? I know most of the times is because they are getting too heated, but when is it necessary? Can any mod tell me what it feels like when you close a thread? (Probably feels awesome)

Yes, usually gets too heated, or someone ends up breaking one of the rules, so it gets closed. We usually try to give a few warnings before closing, but if that doesn't work, well it gets closed.
It would actually be a good feeling if it could have stayed open.
Also, once a thread is old, it sometimes will get closed.

A lot of times when I see the debates section most of them are closed... For some reason I want to close a thread... Just want to try was there ever a thread that really went TOO far?

After several weeks with no activity the thread is closed automatically, whether it's a debate or just a regular thread.

Oh, I never knew that I noticed it in the debate section because we don't get a lot of new stuff there...
