Cheap amazon bulbs

Hi,

My friend has decided she wants a Horsfield tortoise. She has purchased the lamp and bulb in the link, am I right in thinking these are junk? It says UVB but I am dubious of something so cheap and it seems a low wattage, the replacement bulbs are only £5.

Hello! I'm afraid, yes, it's a junk.

There is no any information on UVB output so, you can't set this lamp correctly. Also, it's not clear what lamp types are used, but from form factor I presume these are halogen lamps, which output too narrow beam of heat and light which can contribute to pyramiding. If LED is used for UVB it's rather new and expensive technology for now and have mixed reviews.

As a rescue I have been on the receiving end of supplies along with turtles and tortoises. Many of the linked light set ups have come my way. The only thing they're good for is providing light to see by. I have one on my desk for when I pay bills.

You are right.

Tell your friend she is going to get terrible advice and the wrong products from the pet shop too. And most of the internet is just awful info as well. This is all explained in the thread that Alex and SinLA linked for you. I hope you can convince her to read it.
