I haven't had my CHE that long, like a year, but it already seems to not heat up like it used to. How long do CHE's usually last? The box said 5 years, but I'm thinking that that just means it puts out some amount of heat for a least five years, not that it puts out enough for that long... Or did I just buy a dud?

I think you've bought a dud. I have some over 10 years old still heating up just fine.

I've had two go out completly within a year but the other are over 2 years and going strong. I too think its a dud.
I did find however the more they are handled the less the lifespan.

Ahh, I wish it were! I have spent over 1000$ on animals alone in the past year or so. Prolly more than double that on supplies. :D I am so ungodly careful with my bulbs. I would kill if it died on me prematurely. Sorry about your CHE
