My torts new enclosure is 12 inches deep without the substrate. I am going to use a CHE for constant temp all day and night, as Tom suggested. How do I determine how high I should hang the CHE from the tort and what would be the maximum and minimum height? Thank you.

What species and size tortoise? What size enclosure?

Be sure to run the CHE through a thermostat so it doesn't overheat the enclosure.

The best way to mount your CHE is to have some sort of frame work overhead. For an open topped enclosure you can screw two 2x4 uprights on each end, and mount a horizontal cross beam over the enclosure to hang your heating and lighting from. If its a closed chamber, 12 inches is not tall enough. You need a minimum of 18 inches, and 24-30 is best.
