calcium

My five year old daughter asked what the powder was that i put on our russian tortoises food this morning and I explained that it was calcium and it was kind of like her vitamins. She filled Lucys food dish with it when i wasn't looking. I don't know how much she ate before I saw it and got the dish washed out. i don't know what kind of health problems this could result in. Can anybody advise me?

hi! tortoises need lots of calcium, they know when they need it, so when its present they will eat it. its best to provide a cuttle bone in its enclosure so the tort can eat calcium when he wants to.

I think it is unlikely your tortoise liked the taste of straight calcium powder enough to eat any significant amount.
It is possible to over supplement but probably not in a single event.

Quite a few of us opt for keeping a small dish of calcium powder at all times in the enclosure. This way the tortoise helps himself when he has the craving.
