Any Opuntia cactus can be fed to tortoises. Opuntia is generally viewed as the healthiest cactus in terms of calcium:phosphorous ratio (70:1), vitamins and minerals.

Go for it, You can even grow your own,The Opuntia compressa, robusta, and bentonni should survive your winters. I grow these in Maryland and in the northern neck area of Virginia without any special care.Try some of the spine-less also, I have some spine-less that I'm working with but not sure of their names, some cactus are hard to identify until they bloom and mine hasn't bloomed yet.

I used to have a cactus plant and works feed it to my tort. But I always peeled it because of the little hairlike prickies. Can they eat it with those left on?

There's nobody to peel or de-spine cactus pads for wild tortoises...the spines and "sticky hairs" (glochids) don't slow 'em down a bit!

Spineless varieties are popular for human convenience, not for the tortoise's. ;)
