My sister used to have a pet red ear slider. Whenever the turtle got restless, scrambling to get out of the tank, my sister would take her outside and place her in a safe place where she couldn't escape and the turtle would dig a nest, lay eggs, then my sis would take her back to her water.

So, yes, if your yard dirt is clean of pesticides or chemicals I don't see any reason you can't use it.
