Hello, I am currently using a substrate of 50-50 sand and top soil they both seem happy on this and often dig them self in a little when they snooze. I have noticed that when they go into there hide they always seem restless and kept digging at the edges, I thought this may be because they wanted to seem more buried so I placed some torn newspaper in there and sure enough they go in and settle down straight away. I hate to fix something that isn't broken but is there something better to use than news paper? I was thinking a soft hay, just for the hide though not as a substrate.

Thank you for your help

Thank you Yvonne, I think I will try the moss first, it looks like it won't flatten down as much as the aspen.

Just me but i would remove the sand. They would sometimes accidentally eat their substrate and you dont want want building up in their stomach. Just the topsoil alone should be good enough.
