my tortoise has just come out of hibernation at his beak has grown he is eating ok but how long should it be before I take him to the vets to have it trimmed

Like Tom said a picture will help. With any luck, you may not need a Vet visit, especially since he is eating well with it as is. Natural grinding from like eating off a slate or flat rock and food choices like tougher fibrous plants and whole leaves with stems rather then cut up may still do the job.
