I just found these growing in the garden, no idea what they are as I am useless when it comes to this sort of thing

That might be patience dock. Dock isn't one that I would ever feed, but some folks do.

this is what the tortoise table site says about the dock family:

All the plants from the Polygonaceae family contain high levels of oxalic acid which binds with calcium and other nutrients preventing their absorpbtion, and possible cause of kidney stones and gout; so best to avoid.
