few pictures of my russian. She's nearly 1 years old now. Just wondering how long I'd have to wait to find out the sex? I've named her Delilah assuming she's a girl but I know it's to early to tell.

Cutie pie for sure!!! I think 5" is the minimum size before you can "know" and from what I've read even then you can still guess wrong.

You can tell by 4" in some cases, but there are only three ways to know for sure:
1 A Vet does an Endoscopy
2 The tortoise lays eggs (female)
3 the tortoise "flashes" you (male)

Nice looking baby.

There is no set time or size whey of can tell the sex. Some of them show it earlier than others.

Aww, what a pretty little tort. It'll be awhile before you can determine sex, but Delilah is a cute name. :)

5" is a good rule of thumb for Russians. Sex is easier to determine in Russians than in some other species because the sexual dimorphism tends to be well-pronounced. If male, he'll likely grow a good size tail by 5" and his overall shell growth will slow significantly. If female, she'll still have a teensy tail at 5" and will continue to grow overall.

My tortoise hisses sometimes when you move too fast around her. Is that normal?

Yes, its just him sucking his head into his shell when he gets scared. Perfectly normal. Welcome to the forum. Have you started an introduction thread?
