At the store the man said this tortoise is a baby. What might be the age in reality?

It's almost full grown. Maybe 8 or 10 years of age.

Your tortoise is full grown or nearly so. If you bought it at a chain pet store pretty much everything they told you is wrong. They don’t mean to mislead you, they just don’t know any better. Hopefully if they sold you anything besides the tortoise, you still have the receipt because it likely cost too much and/or is too small.

Pretty much everyone here made beginner mistakes of some kind so don’t worry if you got some bad advice. There is a ton of information on tortoises on the internet and elsewhere and a lot of it is out of date.Things are difficult to sort out at the beginning but it will get easier!
