I've had my horsefield tortoise Gus for about 6 months (he's around a year old now). I've started noticing that this claws seem to be quite long. Do they need doing? I'm sorry the pictures are blurry but hopefully you can tell.

Front Claws:

If they do need cutting, do I have to take him to a vet or can you give me advice on how to do it myself?

Thank you.

Ad a flat cement slab flush with your substrate and place his food in the center of it. A little walking on that will file them down. You could also use an upside down ceramic tile. I use cement, even in my larger torts pens. Make sure that it sits flush because it could also wear down the bottom edge of the shell.

I've never cut or rimmed a single claw on anyone, ever! If they get 'too long' slates and flat rocks will file them down naturally... but it's not often that a tort's nails get too long, and possibly never!
