    Brumation questions

His hottest spot is 95 and the coolest is 75 during the day, with cypress mulch and eco earth with moist and dry spots. He is in an elevated table that is 41/2 x6. There are two hides and a large spider plants to provide hiding spots. Non-heated half of the enclosure had brown fabric over it. I...

    Brumation questions

Hi, I posted three weeks ago about my male Hermann's who quit eating after we moved him to a different enclosure. I have had him to the vet twice and the vet determined that he had become severely dehydrated and we thought that was why he wasn't eating. And, he had a lot of gas on his x-rays...

    Help! Lethargic Hermans won't eat.

Can I ask you some questions about temps? I live in central Texas and it is HOT here. I don't think there is anyway to get Hermes' outdoor enclosure below 95 in the middle of the day, even with shade cloths and lots of plants. He just buries himself him the dirt. If I bring him inside during...

    Help! Lethargic Hermans won't eat.

I took my guy to the vet yesterday. He thought he was dehydrated and that caused him to be constipated. He took x rays to rule out a lung infection and it showed that he was very gassy and had lots of "stuff" sitting in him. There was a round area that he said looked like gas, but could...

    Help! Lethargic Hermans won't eat.

Sorry, I messed up. It's not cedar shavings, it is cypress mulch.

    Help! Lethargic Hermans won't eat.

Thank you. I already started removing the oak and will figure out a way to make sure his enclosure is not getting above 90. If he did eat some oak and it made him not feel well, when could we expect him to feel better? Do I need to try and find a vet? I could drive to one if needed.

    Help! Lethargic Hermans won't eat.

A few days ago we moved our Hermans to the front of the house. He ate like a pig the first day but now he's lethargic and slow. I had him in the back yard but ants and aphids took over. He refuses to eat anything now and will just wants to hide. When we offer him food, he just stares and walks...

Help -Adopted an adult Hermann's today

Here is a close up of his face. Does his beak look normal? Also, I was wondering if the shape of his shell was okay. The rear end looks like it tucks under just a little and I wasn't sure if that was normal. One more question - Do his legs look normal? it almost looks like the scales are...

Help -Adopted an adult Hermann's today

We are trying our best. I thought he looked pretty decent for what the owner described as his care. He was very vague about how long he had him and couldn't tell me an age. Since it was from Craigslist, there is no telling what his history really is. He's 5 1/2 inches long. I am going to...

Help -Adopted an adult Hermann's today

Thanks for the info. I actually was only remembering to do it a couple of times a week (I think I had a mental block because, I wondered at the need because the foods he is eating are high in calcium naturally). It so confusing because a lot of the information seems to be for growing...

Help -Adopted an adult Hermann's today

Here he is. Does he look healthy? We are not feeding him the iceberg anymore, not that he is eating better food.

Help -Adopted an adult Hermann's today

Thank you so much for the response. We are doing much better! He started eating about three days after I posted. We are feeding him dandelion, plantain, dollar weed, squash leaves, zinnia leaves, curly kale, a little romaine and arugula (no more iceberg!). We also offer him ZooMed tortoise...

Help -Adopted an adult Hermann's today

Hi, My daughter and I have been researching tortoises and in the process came across an adult Hermann's tortoise on craigslist. When we found out he was feeding him iceberg lettuce and meal worms and what he would eat in the yard we bought him, really before we were ready for a tortoise. He...

Adopting a Hermann's in Central Texas

Thank you for that suggestion! I think I will contact my local master gardeners as well to identify everything I have growing. I have a very large fenced in garden area (raised beds so he can't get at the tomatoes and other nightshades) and I hope to have that available to him in future, as...

Adopting a Hermann's in Central Texas

Hi, My daughter and I are adopting an adult Hermann's tortoise from a person on Craigslist. I know this may not be the ideal source, but i think we can give it a better home than it was being provided. They were feeding it meal worms, which , if I understand all we have read, is probably not...
